LLM Educational Program with American University

The LL.M. Program with Washington College of Law is a challenging opportunity for Luiss students currently enrolled in the fourth year of the Luiss single-cycle Master’s degree program in Law - specific majors. 

After its completion, Luiss students will obtain the Single-cycle Master’s degree in Law issued by Luiss University and an LL.M. from the Washington College of Law (WCL).

Highlights

The students selected for the Double Degree will be registered at Luiss during their time at WCL and will continue to pay tuition fees at Luiss. Students will be exempt from paying tuition at WCL, however they will be required to bear administrative costs related to the program:

  • Student health insurance: approximately 1890$ for 2 semesters, if obtained through WCL;
  • Administrative fees for Fall and Spring semester: approximately 894$ in total.

In order to earn the two diplomas, students will have to be in compliance with both their home and host universities' rules and conditions with regard to credits, attendance, deadlines etc.

Who can apply

Students enrolled in the fourth year of the single-cycle Master's program in Law can apply to this program. According to their major, students can apply for:

  • an LL.M. in Advocacy: open to students majoring in Diritto Civile, Diritto Penale, Diritto Amministrativo and Diritto Internazionale;
  • an LL.M. in Intellectual Property: open to students majoring in Diritto internazionale and Diritto ed Economia delle Imprese;
  • an LL.M. in International Legal Studies: open to students majoring in Diritto ed Economia delle Imprese, Diritto Internazionale, Diritto Societario e Tributario, Diritto Civile;
  • an LL.M. in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law: open to students majoring in Diritto Internazionale;
  • an LL.M. in Law and Government: opne to students majoring in Diritto Internazionale, Diritto Amministrativo, Diritto Civile, Diritto ed Economia delle Imprese, Diritto Penale, Diritto Societario e Tributario.

How to apply

The call for applications is published on December 9, 2019 and applications can be submitted until January 31, 2020. Candidates are required to submit the following:

  • Application form
  • English language certificate
  • ID card
  • Motivation letter
  • Photo in JPG Format
  • Curriculum vitae / résumé
  • Most recent transcript of records

Pre requirements

Eligible students can apply if they comply with the following requirements:

  • have passed and registered at least a total of 180 credits;
  • hold a weighted average grade equal to or above 27/30;
  • hold one of the following English certificates: TOEFL equal or above 563 (paper-based) or 84 (iBT), IELTS equal or above 6.5, Pearson Academic (PTE) equal or above 56.

Study Plan

Requirements for Luiss students to earn the WCL LL.M.:

All students must complete the 24-credit program as outlined by whichever in-residence LL.M. degree they choose. Students are required to take the following mandatory courses:

  • American Legal Institutions
  • Legal Research and Writing 

Individual programs may have additional required courses. This information will be shared with the student upon admission to the dual degree program. In order to remain in good academic standing, LL.M. students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 (a C average). All LL.M. students are required to complete either a Research Track or a Practical Skills Track. Students in the Research Track will complete a research paper in order to qualify for graduation. Students in the Practical Skills Track must complete an approved externship before graduating.
